Patagonia Itinerary

DAY 1 – MARCH 8, 2020 BUENOS AIRES Arrive at any time. You will be met and transferred to our start hotel.  Arrival Day is a free day to explore on your own before the welcome meeting. Do an optional activity if you arrive early. Make sure you’re back in time for the group ‘meet and greet’.  Optional Activities – Day 1 Buenos Aires Guided City Tour If you have time, enjoy a guided tour exploring beautiful, vibrant Buenos Aires. Be introduced to historic sites and districts, including Plaza de Mayo where Eva Peron’s famed balcony presides over the square. See La Boca and San Telmo’s colorful street life, painted houses, and the famed Recoleta Cemetery. Accommodation Kenton Palace hotel (or similar)  

DAY 2 – MARCH 9 BUENOS AIRES/SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE Hop a flight to northern Patagonia. Take the scenic San Carlos de Bariloche Circuito Chico tour.  The luggage restrictions for all Aerolineas Argentinas flights are 15kg for checked baggage and 5kg for carry-ons, if luggage is overweight fees will apply. No organic food is allowed as Patagonia is a protected area. Bags will be checked upon arrival in El Calafate.   Bariloche Circuito Chico Tour San Carlos de Bariloche 4h Enjoy an introduction to the highlights of San Carlos de Bariloche. Stop at Bahia Lopez (Lopez Bay) and Panoramic Point and take in the beautiful landscape. Continue on to Cerro Campanario (Bell Mountain), take the chairlift to the top for an even better view. DAY 3 – MARCH 10 SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE Free time to explore this stunning region. Take a bike tour, hike, kayak or explore the town. Bariloche resembles the alpine resorts of Europe. Sample a beef parrillada, or a variety of fresh salmon or lake trout, then take a day hike around Cerro Catedral or enjoy some shopping. It’s also important to know that Bariloche is famous for its quality and quantity of chocolate! Optional Activities – Day 3 Hiking $35 per person Hit some trails to get up close to the area’s natural beauty. Enjoy amazing views amid mountains and lakes while exploring the Lake District on foot. Mountain Biking $10 per person Choose from a number of different scenic routes and trails that wind through the Argentine Lake District’s stunning landscapes.  Bariloche Rafting $65 per person Grab a paddle, strap on your helmet, and head down the Class III/IV rapids of the Manso River towards the Chilean border. Take a rest from paddling and take in the beautiful scenery around the emerald waters before rewarding your hard work with an “Asado Patagónico” (Patagonian barbecue). DAY 4 – MARCH 11 SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE/PUERTO VARAS Travel by bus and ferry to Puerto Varas, which is located in the stunning Chilean Lake District. Enjoy the sights from the “Cruce de Los Lagos”, considered one of the most scenic ferry cruises in the world. There are few areas in the world that can match the Chilean Lake District for scenic grandeur. Enjoy picture-perfect views of snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, emerald lakes, smoking volcanoes, forests, and glaciers.  The approximate journey time today is 10 to 11 hours. This journey is by comfortable bus and a scenic ferry across the Chilean/Argentine border. Travel time is approximate and based on the time of year and weather conditions. During certain times of the year, the ferry cannot be used. This requires that we travel overland by bus.   Cruce de Los Lagos Cruise Petrohué10h-11h Chile’s Lake District has few rivals when it comes to sheer scenic grandeur. Cross the placid Lago Todos Los Santos aboard a catamaran and marvel at vast mountainscapes and stunning views that’ll have your shutter finger working overtime. Enjoy the breeze and beautiful scenery then continue by bus and another ferry. This full-day excursion is considered one of the world’s most scenic ferry crossings.  Border Crossing (Argentina Chile) Puerto Frías – Peulla Accommodation Hotel Cabana del Lago (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast  

DAY 5 – MARCH 12 PUERTO VARAS Enjoy free time to explore on your own. Take an excursion to Chiloé Island or opt for one of two treks. Chiloé Island Excursion $12 per person Take the ferry to Chiloé Island. This quaint fishing village is known for its wooden houses on stilts, artistic wooden shingles, and historical churches (remnants of the Jesuit influence of the Spanish conquistadors), most of which has been declared as Patrimony to Humanity sites. Sample fresh fish and produce for lunch, then motor to a penguin colony to see upwards of 5,000 Humboldt and Magellanic penguins when the season is right (roughly October – March).   Paso Desolacion Trek Puerto Varas $10 per person Head out early on a guided tour through volcanic canyons, past waterfalls, and turquoise pools to the base of Osorno Volcano.  Osorno Volcano Day Hike $130 per person Discover the natural beauty of the region on this exhilarating hike up to the ice-clad Osorno. Enjoy spectacular views of Lake Llanquihue, the surrounding mountains and forests, and the Petrohue River valley resting below. DAY 6 – MARCH 13 PUERTO VARAS/TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK Catch a flight to Punta Arenas then transfer to Torres del Paine National Park.  Word and photos cannot capture the beauty of this national park in Chilean Patagonia. Those who have the opportunity to see this area are blown away by the vivid colors, tranquility, and majesty of this region. Once a large sheep estancia, the park was established in 1959 as the Parque Nacional Lago Grey. Land was added to the park in 1962 and the name was changed to its present one. Torre” (Tower) Surrises 2,900m (9,512 ft) above sea level, the Torre Centralis 2,850m (9,348 ft) high, and the Torre Norte measures 2,600m (8,528 ft). The “Cuernos” (Horns) del Paine, massive blocks of various rock layers visible from great distances, are as spectacular as the towers themselves. DAY 7 – MARCH 14 TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK Torres del Paine 8h-9h Full-day excursion with an expert guide. Travel by van and stop along the way for short walks and beautiful lookout points. Stop at Grey River and the park office, then continue over the Grey Bridge to the forest zone and Grey Lake, its ice mass is stunning against the surrounding landscape. Walk along the path to get a closer view of the Grey Glacier with its huge ice blocks resting in the lake. Continue on to Paine River and admire the pure turquoise colors of Pehoé Lake before a short walk to Nordenskjold Lake for a wonderful view of the Paine Horns. Also visit Sarmiento Lake, Amarga Lagoon, Paine Falls, and the Azul Lagoon. Accommodation Hosteria Lago Grey (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner  

DAY 8 – MARCH 15 TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK/EL CALAFATE Scenic drive to El Calafate.  Drive towards lofty peaks to the dynamic Moreno Glacier in Glacier National Park. Spot condors, rheas, eagles or flamingos en route, but the real star of the day is the glacier itself, located at the southern terminus of Glacier National Park. DAY 9 – MARCH 16 EL CALAFATE   After a morning lecture by a local glacier expert, we head into Glacier National Park to view the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the world’s few “advancing” glaciers. The southern end of Los Glaciares National Park is where Moreno’s 60m (197 ft) wall of ice sporadically chokes off the narrow “Canal de Los Tempanos” (Iceberg Channel) creating a natural ice dam, which eventually explodes in a dynamic display of force. There’s an option to get closer with a boat ride up to the front of the glacier.   Optional Activities – Day 9 Perito Moreno Glacier Boat Tour Abel Tasman National Park 25 USD per person Embark on the floating dock in the south arm of Argentino Lake and navigate along the Iceberg Channel towards the front wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier where most of the ice calving takes place. This boat trip, which lasts approximately one hour, is one of the most popular excursions and is Must See. DAY 10 – MARCH 17 EL CALAFATE/USHUAIA Fly to the port city of Ushuaia at the end of the earth. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world and is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel.  Plane El Calafate – Ushuaia1h15m-1h30m Free Time The small port town of Ushuaia is quite busy with lots of shops and some great restaurants.   Optional Activities – Day 10 Ushuaia Helicopter Ride Price TBD Soar above Ushuaia, admire the natural beauty of the landscape and gaze out at the towering mountains.    The Maritime Museum and Prison at the End of the World Museum $8 per person Visit the Navy Museum, which was previously the Recidivist Prison. Learn about two different histories of seafarers and prisoners who both arrived at “the end of the earth.”   Tierra del Fuego National Park Visit $58 USD per person Explore this stunning coastal national park extending 630 sq. km. Pass Valle Rio Pipo on the way to Austral Fueguino train station, opt to take the End of the World train before visiting Lago Roca and Bahía Lapataia. Keep an eye out for a variety of birdlife and spectacular colors in the fall.  Keep your eyes peeled and binoculars ready to spot some amazing birds.  Accommodation Cilene del Faro Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

DAY 11 – MARCH 18 USHUAIA Penguin Rookery & Beagle Channel Excursion Start the adventure by navigating the Beagle channel on a catamaran and admire the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse, Seal Island, and Bird Island. Later, get up close and personal with penguins at the end of the earth. Travel by minibus and boat to Martillo Island to explore the rookery, home to almost 1,000 nests. Follow a naturalist guide along the designated trails and walk amongst Magellanic and gentoo penguins as you learn more about them.  Accommodation Cilene del Faro Hotel (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

DAY 12 – MARCH 19 USHUAIA/BUENOS AIRES Fly back to Buenos Aires and take some time to explore on your own. Take a break and enjoy a drink at one of the many sidewalk cafés, ideal places to get a feel for the contemplative Argentine way of life.  Local Tango Lesson Spend the evening enjoying a night out with a tango lesson from local dancers before having a traditional light dinner. Then we head to a popular dance venue for Milonga, a neighborhood tradition where students and teachers of the venue show up to practice their moves. Sit back and enjoy or if you’re brave, join in. DAY 13 – MARCH 20 BUENOS AIRES Enjoy a city tour of the “Paris of the Americas”, visiting key sights and neighborhoods including Plaza de Mayo where Eva Perón’s famed balcony presides over the square, La Boca, and the renowned Recoleta Cemetery. Visit the districts of La Boca, Recoleta, and San Telmo. Catch a tango show at one of the many famous tanguerías or wander the pedestrian walkways and see some dancing in the streets. Buenos Aires Bike Tour $33 USD per person Cruise the city on a bicycle with a local Argentine guide. Bike, helmet and local knowledge included. See Plaza de Mayo, San Telmo, colorful Caminito, and the working-class neighborhoods where Tango was born.   Teatro Colón Tour $8 per person Explore this stunning opera house on a guided tour and find out why it is voted one of the best acoustic venues in the world.    La Boca Neighborhood Visit Visit La Boca to soak in the vibrancy of the barrio’s brightly colored buildings and El Caminito (a cobblestone street lined with artist studios that’s often used as an impromptu setting for tango performances). Possibly catch a match at fabled La Bombonera, the home stadium of the Boca Juniors’ fútbol club.  Accommodation Kenton Palace (or similar) Meals included: Breakfast

DAY 14 – MARCH 21 BUENOS AIRES Depart at any time. Meals included: Breakfast All internal flights and transport are included with the exception of departing airport transfer.
